Last year I had a goal—which I only discussed with a few people—to run three 5k’s. I surpassed that by running five, so this year I’m upping the ante for my physical challenges by declaring them publicly and diversifying the activities.
Jump into 1 Polar Plunge. I’m signed up for one this weekend, and I honestly am not sure how I will force myself into the water. Hopefully the crowd mentality will be of some assistance.
Center myself with 2 yoga classes. Not a difficult challenge at first glance, but with no yoga studios (that I know of) in Perry County, my access is limited to times when I visit other places. I do practice at home once or twice a week, but it’s a different dynamic in class.
Stay balanced with 3 long bike rides. They must be 20 miles or more. I just finished writing an article that involved talking to a bunch of local cyclists and by all accounts Perry County is a great place for me to get back into a regular biking habit. I will be wearing a helmet, and you should, too.
Run to my heart’s content in 4 5k races. I’d especially love to a CMY5K because I have a graphic design geek lurking inside me…and it’s probably the closest thing I can get to Holi until I make it back to India.
Get back to basics with 5 hikes. Actually I fully intend to hike more than 5 times, but that goal is specifically for hiking in new locations. On New Year’s Day I visited Joseph E. Ibberson Conservation Area in Dauphin County for the first time, and I can’t wait to get out to more unfamiliar territory!
Tell me about your challenges, resolutions or exciting plans for 2013!

I like how you wrote “challenges,” not “resolutions,” because I hate that word. But identifying what you want to do or change is an EXCELLENT thing! So far, my challenges are to dance more, read more, and hike more, although I’ve also started looking for a flash mob. I too would like to sign up for a 5K though, and I hadn’t remembered that until I read your post. Keep me posted for some good local ones AND good local hikes and we’ll coincide somehow…
Yeah, I don’t like to put fitness goals in the “resolution” box because I don’t like to get into the discourse around weight loss and body image and punitive thinking about health. It’s better for me to focus on feeling active and challenged
Plus there’s the whole thing with “resolutions” talk disappearing after January whereas I challenge myself all year long!
I also have a goal this year to be more self-sufficient. Not financially speaking but in terms of learning how to fix things that break and making DIY cleaning products and stuff.
I like your challenges! I’ve never been in a flash mob but am sure I’d enjoy it. We should run a 5K together in Pittsburgh! That’ll give me cause to set a date for visiting
Did I tell you my sister just moved out there?
I love this post (although it makes me wonder if we are actually related since I would do only 1 of those 5 things) and now I want to make a list of challenges for myself. Will you help me think of some that fit better with my lifestyle?
Which would you do? The hikes?
And yes I’d be happy to help you come up with a list of challenges! I don’t have suggestions but I can probably help by asking you questions.
Also your “lifestyle” is an interesting way of phrasing the differences between us, lol.
